Palisha Shakya: Dancing for a cause

15 years old Palisha Shakya is actively involved in creating awareness among the people regarding drug addiction and child right through Flashmob and dramas. She is studying in grade 9 of Omega Higher Secondary School, Lalitpur. She is actively working as a member of National Youth Federation Nepal and Voice of Children. She loves to get involved in a various range of activities that are organized in her community and nearby. Moreover, she is passionate about dancing.

Starting her journey

She said that her mother is the greatest inspiration for her. Seeing her mother work in ‘Thaina Misa Pucha’, a female club of Newari community, she aimed to work for the society she is living in.

Her journey towards the social activism started with joining National Youth Federation Nepal. Furthermore, she got fascinated by the tremendous work done by the Voice of Children on child rights and later got involved in it too.

Making a difference

“I’m passionate about dancing and I’m relating my passion with a step towards transforming the society”, she said when asked about her impacts in the society. She strongly believes that the awareness being created through play cards, articles, slogans are being outdated. Instead, she wants to aware people through entertainment. That’s why she is actively involving herself in creating impacts in the mindset of people through the flash mob and street dramas. In Addition, she is confident that she has been able to enlighten the thoughts and knowledge of many parents about proper guidance to their children.

A step towards teen hero

She had first heard about the Glocal Teen Hero 2018 through the team which had gone to her school for the information session. Then, she applied considering her works to be recognized. She feels honored to be selected as one of the teen amidst Glocal’s 20 under 20.

She feels lucky enough to be doing what she loves for the transformation of society. She suggests that the society we live in is not mature enough to understand the capability of teens, but the future of this society is in the teen’s hand regardless of our ages. She says that age doesn’t matter if you really believe in yourself and your work to change the perception of society.

If I had 8 hours to cut a tree, I’d spent my 7 hours sharpening the axe”
