Parsa, November 20, 2016: Lack of toilet in public schools is one of the prominent reasons for dropout and irregularity of girl students in the district.

At an interaction organised in Birgunj on Saturday, stakeholders complained that girl students have to face difficulties and even they quit their studies due to the lack of toilet in schools.

According to them, most of the schools do not have toilets and some that do are in poor condition–even without water. Owing to the lack of toilet and sanitary pad, the girls are irregular in classes during periods.

Girl students share their ordeals during the interaction organised by Aasaman Nepal, an NGO working in the field of girl education, where representatives of the District Education Office were among the attendees.

They said prevailing child marriage has also been affecting the girl education.

They also complained that most of the schools in rural areas are closed after the tiffin break and that even the teachers discouraged their daughters from coming to school.

The organisation has launched a programme named “Thulo Didi”, big sister, in about a dozen schools in the district in the past three years.

After listening hardships and ordeals faced by the girl students during the programme, District Education Officer Kedar Tiwari assured that he would take action against those schools that do not have toilets or do not keep toilets in good condition.
