Ilam,12 Jan 2015: Milk production has increased by 4.75 per cent in Ilam in the last fiscal year 2071/72 BS as compared to previous fiscal year.

The district produced 116,086 metric tonnes of milk in the last fiscal year against 110,817 metric tonnes in the fiscal year 2069/70 BS.

According to the District Livestock Service Office, artificial insemination of cows and buffaloes is the main reason behind the increase in milk production.Farmers in the district are rearing improved cows in a commercial manner. A total of 33,371 improved cows in the district. Now farmers are getting good income from selling milk.A total of 99,513 metric tonnes of milk was produced in the fiscal year 2067/068 BS while it was 105,095 metric tonnes in the fiscal year 2068/69 BS.

Manager of the Ilam Dairy Producers’ Cooperative, Arjun Shiwakoti, said that  milk is being sold at Rs 35 per litre in the district.
