Kathmandu, 6th February, 2015 : Election for the five elected post of councilors of the Nepal Bar Council is taking place on Saturday, with the major competition likely between the democratic group and the progressive alliance.
In the election, the democratic panel candidates in the fray are Hem Narayan Chaudhary, Amita Laxmi Sainju Shrestha, Mohannath Koirala, Bir Bahadur Rokaya and Ramesh Dev Bhatta from the eastern, central, western, mid-western and far-western regions respectively. Likewise, the progressive panel is being represented in the same order by Suresh Lal Shrestha, Mahesh Kumar Nepal, Govinda Poudel, Anirudha Giri and Padma Raj Sharma.
Also contesting in the election is another democratic panel led by Bharat Kharel including Uddav Chandra Ghimire (eastern), Devendra Jha (central) and Bhupendra Bahadur Bista (far-western).
A total of 8,147 voters are taking part in the election of which more than six thousands are based in the central region, according to senior administrative officer of the Council Bidur Prasad Sapkota.
One each councilor is elected from the five development regions with two more nominated by Nepal Bar Association. The Council has an eleven-member executive body with the Attorney General of Nepal and the Chairman of Nepal Bar Association the ex-officio Chairman and Vice-chairman respectively. Apart from this, the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nepal and the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Tribhuvan University, Nepal are the ex-officio Councilors.
Since its establishment in 1995, the Council has been working mainly in conducting examination for issuing licence for law practice, maintaining records of law practitioners and working for their professional advancement, and also reviewing and investigation the adherence to the code of conduct by the law practitioners.
