Kathmandu, February 17, 2018: The student committee of the British Model College has successfully concluded British Model College Model United Nations (BMCMUN 2018) on February 14, 2018, at The British College, Trade Tower, Thapathali, Kathmandu.
The motto of the fourth edition of the BMCMUN was “Discover| Learn| Grow”. The purpose of the three-day event was to provide a common platform to the participants to discover themselves and build their confidence and social skill. It also aimed to recreate United Nations processes, resolutions, and diplomacy as well as to let the participants an insight of international relations and politics.
The major committees moderated in this three-day event were UNSC, DISEC, ECOSOC, UNHSC, UNHRC and Legislative Parliament(Vyavastapika Sansad). These committees dealt about international security issues and peacekeeping forces; disarmament of arms and ammunition; widespread economic and social issues; the historical case of security issues; spreading and protecting of human rights across borders respectively. The Legislative Parliament, an all Nepali session committee moderated was third of its kind in the history of Nepali MUN session.
The first day of the event began with the welcome ceremony where the participating international diplomats delivered formal speeches. The selected student delegates were given information about the norms and procedures of MUN. There was also a discussion session in ECOSOC about the South China Sea which included military bases, its rich natural resources, the historical claim of China over the region and possibilities of war in the region. The questions were raised up as various countries vied for control over this strategic region. The committee also shared their stories from previous MUNs which was followed by the exchange of questions.
Similarly, the second day commenced with the General Speaker List (GSL). The delegates of Brunei, China, France, and the USA had a debate and discussion session on how France had been providing economic aid to Brunei with the purpose of creating military weapons.
On the third day of the event, Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) had a debate session where delegates from different countries put forward their thoughts and ideas on their respective countries. ‘Vyavastapika Sansad’ was the only committee dealing with the national issue where delegates actively participated in the arguments and debates. In this session, different delegates representing different political parties expressed their own personal opinion as well as their party’s opinion on the agenda and presented outstanding ideas and resolutions. The committee had four major parties represented by the delegates, each portraying political leaders from CPN Maoist, CPN UML, Nepali Congress and Rastriya Janata Party with one leader from Rastriya Prajatantra Party.
Arniko Raj Gautam, one of the Dais member and Chair of ECOSOC mentioned, “I genuinely am satisfied. Totally blown away in which the delegates have been able to prevent themselves. Most delegates have managed to balance the mixture of confidence and context in their performance and as a member of the executive board, I couldn’t ask for more. So, all in all, I think that the delegates deserve all the accolades that come their way.”
