Kathmandu, August 29, 2016: In order to promote Community Learning Center(CLC)s as lifelong learning resource centers at community level, UNESCO in collaboration with the Non Formal Education Center (NFEC) and Shikharapur CLC recently organized an interaction programme in Lalitpur.
The programme gathered Members of the Parliament, the Ministry of Local Development, the District Development Committee, CLC representatives and lifelong learning experts to raise awareness, sensitize, discuss and debate concepts and strategies aimed at establishing and promoting CLCs as lifelong learning resource centers.
In the programme, Diwakar Dhungel from the NFEC and Tap Raj Pant from UNESCO provided valuable perspectives on the issues of lifelong learning and literate environments. Shikharapur CLC presented their best practices and introduced their recently inaugurated lifelong learning resource center. Prof. Dr. Tanka Nath Sharma, an expert on lifelong learning education, further added his inputs for the development of lifelong learning education through CLCs.
Rajendra Kumar KC, the Chief Guest for the programme and also an MP at the Constituent Assembly of Nepal, emphasized the importance of community involvement and explained how lifelong learning is a way of giving back to the citizens. Binod Shrestha, the other MP present in the programme expressed his commitment to develop lifelong learning education in his election area.
The event also had an active discussion session with all participants. The discussion focused on how lifelong learning should cater to learners’ needs and thus cover a wide range of topics such as health, agriculture, local knowledge and inter-generational learning. Some called for the integration of lifelong learning in all programmes and policies in an effort of bridging the gap between Formal and Non Formal Education with support from the media, CLCs and society at large.
