Kathmandu, February 23, 2018: As per the report released by Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index(CPI) 2017 on February 21, 2018, Nepal has forecasted improvement in its previous position of global corruption transparency index.
In comparison to previous years, Nepal has improved by uplifting itself through nine positions. Among 176 countries listed by the survey, Nepal has been ranked with the position of 122nd. Previously, Nepal ranked in the position of 131th in the CPI.
In the context of Nepal, CPI has found problems in different sectors such as abuse of public post and authority, lack of motioning and action, limited access of people to information and political corruption. According to Transparency International Nepal, the improvement in ranking is commendable but itstill marks that corruption prevalence in Nepal is still worrisome.
Surya Nath Upadhyay, former chief of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, mentioned that Nepal’s progress in the corruption index was the result of promulgation of the new constitution and holding of elections. Furthermore, he added, “Now the challenge is to maintain good governance at all levels.”
As per the report, New Zealand is on top of the list with 89 marks followed Denmark with 88 marks in the CPI. Likewise, Somalia has been ranked the most corrupt country with nine marks. Bangladesh is ranked 146th, Pakistan 23rd, the Maldives 118th, Sri Lanka 97th, India 85th and Bhutan 29th.In South Asia, Afghanistan is ranked 177th out of 180 nations.
The measuring system of CPI is on a scale from 0 to 100 where countries securing large scale of numbers are least corrupt and vice versa.
