North Korea hit by Drought

June 17, 2015: North Korea faces worst drought in a century, it is said that North Korea may face the shortage of food.

According to State news agency KCNA  the growing paddies were badly affected by drought. North Korea regularly faces the shortage of food and about one third children of the country faces malnutrition according to United Nations world food program.

Granaries in the provinces of South Hwanghae, North Hwanghae, South Phyongan and South Hamgyong are badly affected according to KCNA. They are planting other crops in the paddy field to reduce the damage. Last year North Koreans faced lowest rainfall in 30 years.

BBC’s Stephen Evans said due to the drought in 1990 the country allowed privately organised farming and the output is seen. Countries like South Korea regularly sends aids to North Korea for food, nutrition, agriculture and sanitation.
