Kathmandu,24 Nov 2014: The operation of vehicles according to the odd and even number plate system on alternate days beginning today until the 28th of this month has been found to be effective.

The authorities took this measure to reduce the traffic congestion in the capital’s roads in view of the upcoming 18th Summit of the South Asian Association fore Regional Cooperation (SAARC) taking place here on 26 and 27 November.

Because of this arrangement, the number of vehicles has reduced almost by half than on usual days. The less number of public vehicles means that passengers are having hard time catching vehicles to work. The public vehicles bearing the even number plates are crowded because of this situation. A large number of people are also seen walking to work.

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, Kathmandu stated that the odd and even number plate system which came into effect from the morning today has been effective and they have not encountered any problems managing the traffic so far.

MTPD said some vehicles not conforming to the odd and even number plate system at sensitive areas of the capital were turned back while vehicles found violating this rule would be subjected to action from tomorrow.

As per this system, vehicles with even number plates would be allowed to operate today and on 26 and 28 November and those with odd number plate on 25 and 27 November.

However, vehicles used for essential services , the media, ambulances, mortuary vans, fire vehicles, vehicles used in blood transfusion services, vehicles carrying hospital and diplomatic mission staffs, vehicles carrying tourists and marriage ceremony would be exmpt from this system.
