27 October,2014: According to the makers of The Shaukeens, what differentiates their comedy from others in the genre is that the film’s actors have had fun at their own expense. Writer Tigmanshu Dhulia and director Abhishek Sharma conceptualised the movie on the basis that all actors would have a blast laughing at themselves.

As Abhishek explains, “Akshay (Kumar) plays himself, a superstar, but with a twist — while he talks about staying healthy in public, he is an alcoholic off camera.” Lisa Haydon’s character is that of a fan so obsessed with Akshay that she practically stalks him. She adds, “Though I’m not like that at all in reality, it was good to make fun of myself.”

If that’s not enough, Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra too had to bring their ‘tharki’ side to the fore, to stay true to their characters. “Hollywood does it all the time. I feel the audience in India too is ready for a comedy of this kind, where actors dare to laugh at themselves,” sums up the director.

The Shaukeens, produced by Murad Khetani, Cape Of Good Films and Ashwin Varde, releases November 7.
