Jajarkot, 18 October 2014: As many as 13 people have died of rabies in a very remote Majkot VDC of the district as they depended on shaman for treatment.

According to a local Hari Bahadur Shahi, mad dogs bit people, but they resorted to shamanism for treatment in stead of taking anti-rabies vaccine.

“After such huge casualties, we are visiting District Health Office for vaccination now. We did blunder by believing in shaman’s treatment,” he said.

Mayaram Upadhyay, 53; Kaldhari Sahi, 35; Tuli Khatri, 43; Dila Basnet,23; Kalpana Bar, 54; are among those killed of the disease.

Similarly, more than 60 cattle died of rabies in the locality.

Another local Ratna come in the District Health Office rued, “I’ve come for anti-rabies vaccine. Thirteen died so far due to blind belief on shamanism.”

It takes two days’ trek to reach at Majkot from the district headquarters.

On the other hand, In-Charge at Dashera Health Post, Ram Bahadur Thapa, said although preparations were afoot to manage anti-rabies vaccine at Dashera, they failed to manage it for lack of refrigerator. It forced people to visit the district headquarters.
