Kathmandu, Nov 3,2014: Nepal Press Union is to take initiative to lead a common trade union for the rights and welfare of working journalists.
The first meeting of the NPU held in Nawalparasi after its recent eighth national general convention in Pokhara has decided to stand by a trade union movement for the guarantee of the rights of working journalists.
The union is of the opinion that the FNJ should be developed as a common trade union organization advocating for the trade union rights of working journalists.
The central committee has decided to take lead role in holding consultations with other concerned media organizations if the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) was not ready to take up the role.
NPU Chairperson Badri Sigdel informed that the union has decided to organize nationwide pressure creating programme in favour of promulgating a democratic constitution by January 22.
The meeting also stressed the need to put pressure on the state to implement the provisions of Working Journalist Act.
