Kathmandu,17 Dec 2014: Leaders of civil society have asked the government to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prithvi Narayan Shah and National Unity Day on Poush 27, as per the Nepali calendar, and to declare a public holiday on the day.

The government formed after the People’s Movement-II had cut the public holiday given on the occasion on Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day.

Though the government did not celebrate the Prithvi Jayanti in a formal way, the day is being celebrated by civil society by organising various programmes.

A delegation of leaders of different sectors today met with Prime Minister Sushil Koirala at latter’s official residence om Baluwatar and drew attention to mark the National Unity Day and to declare a public holiday.

Expressing worry over disrespecting the contribution of late king Prithvi Narayan Shah, campaigner of Prithvi Thoughts Bharat Basnet said they drew attention of the Prime Minister to stop such acts.

On the occasion, PM Koirala said a decision would be taken in this regard by holding discussions, as contribution of Prithvi Narayan Shah in national unity was significant.

The delegation comprised Arjun Narsingh KC, Modnath Prashrit, Buddhi Narayan Shrestha, Dr Ramesh Ghungel, Dr Subarna KC, Peshal Niraula, Khagendra Sitaula, Som Prasad Pandey and Dharma Raj Baral.

The campaigners will also draw attention of leaders of different political parties including the CPN (UML) and CPN-Maoist.
