Indian athlete created world record in Beijing on Monday

India, September 6, 2015: Indian athlete Lalita Babar has created a world record in the 3000m steeplechase event in a timing of 9:27:86 minutes at the 2015 World Athletics Championship ongoing in Beijing, China. The 26-year old Lalita has finished fourth in her heat and qualified for the finals. The heat was topped by Habiba Ghribi of Tunisia who cracked it in 9:24:38 minutes.

Lalita has now become the first Indian woman to qualify for a track event final in the elite competition. Long jumper Anju Bobby George was the first Indian woman to qualify for the World championship final in a field event. In the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Lalita had clocked 9:37.35 and bag the bronze medal. She has gained an Asian Games silver medal before. Lalita, belonging from Satara district of Maharashtra, has left an impact in the Indian Athletic history.
