Ministerial meeting of Asia-Pacific LDCs from Dec. 16  

Kathmandu,14 Dec 2014: The ministerial meeting of Asia-Pacific Least Developed Countries (LDCs) comprising high-level officials of the United Nations is going to be held in Kathmandu from December 16-18.

The meeting aims at contributing to the graduation process in LDCs, exploring how this process can be backed up by strong national strategies, while mainstreaming graduation into development cooperation strategies and linking effectively with midterm review of Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) and post-2015 development framework.

The IPoA adopted at the Fourth UN Conference on LDCs in Istanbul, Turkey in May 2011 constitutes an ambitious agenda by the international community to address the challenges faced by the LDCs, based on the fundamental tents of mutual accountability as well as strengthened and enhanced international cooperation.

The overarching goal of the IPoA is to overcome the structural challenge faced by the LDCs in order to eradicate poverty, achieve internationally agreed development goals and enable them for graduation from the LDC category.

Spokesperson at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Khaganath Adhikari, told RSS that the meeting would be very fruitful to exchange the experiences and strategies of the countries recently graduated to the category of the developed country at a time when Nepal has set a target to upgrade itself to the same category within 2022.

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala is scheduled to inaugurate the meeting. Ministers from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Vanuatu and Yemen and United Nations Assistant Secretary General Haoliang Xu will arrive here Monday to participate in the meeting, added Adhikari.

Similarly, United Nations Office of the High Representatives for the Least Developed Countries, Land Locked Developing Countries and Small Developing States and United Nations Under Secretary General, Gyan Chandra Acharya has already arrived here for the same.
