2 Jan 2015 : On the occasion of New Year’s Day, Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) – Nepal conducted the third episode of its program, Uddhyami Junction, with Mr. AvashGhimire today. Mr. Avash is one of the co-founders of Maidan Futsal, one of the most popular futsals in Kathmandu. To an audience of 22 students and young aspiring entrepreneurs, Mr. Avash shared about his entrepreneurial journey as well as lessons he learnt along the way.

As a student who had just finished B.B.A from ACE Institute of Management, he had to go through immense pressure from parents and the society urging him to find employment in a bank or find a so called respectable job, but he along with all six partners were persistence to open the sixth futsal of Nepal at the time. After pooling resources among the partners, they were finally able to get their futsal up and running although the actual cost of establishment ran about NRs. 4.5 million as opposed to their initial projection of NRs. 2 million. He says, he is very happy to have gone through the process without giving up. “Today I get invited to speak in front of young people, run my own television program and know a lot of people. I would not have achieved all this had I not risked and persisted in my venture”, he told the audience.

Sharing about the challenges he has been facing, he shared about how the perception of law enforcement agencies towards futsal and other recreational activities of young people, has been acting as a hurdle to business similar to his. Once the police had taken the owners of every futsal of the valley into custody accusing them of promoting hooliganism and drug usage without any search warrants or evidences. “When we think of business, we need to understand that situations like such are not rare, they happen once in a while so we need to be prepared on how to handle them”, he told the listeners.

According to him, with a lot of competitors in the market and a lot of maintenance problems, Maidan Futsal cannot afford to rest on its laurels despite being one of the pioneers in the field. However, as per him, customer service is the unique selling proposition of Maidan Futsal.

He also told the aspiring entrepreneurs not to worry about the investment, if the idea and the will are very strong. As the entrepreneurs seemed to know what he was talking about every audience could relate for him.
