Second largest festival started from today

Kathmandu November 9, 2015: Tihar also known as Yamapanchak and Deepawali , the second largest festival of the Nepali and Hindus started from today. Deepawali is observed for five days.

On this festival the bonding between a brother and a sister is respected and recognized through Bhai Tika. This time Bhai Tika falls on November 13, this year. In this occasion sisters put tika to their brothers wishing for longevity and prosperity whereas brothers in turn give gifts and commitment to take care of their sisters.

According to Nepal Calender Fixation Committee, this time the auspicious hour for the Bhai Tika is at 11:55.

The most gratification of this festival are eating various sweets and sel roti, decorating homes with colourful lights, flowers and oil-fed lamps. And significant aspect of this festival are playing of deusi bhailo and worshipping of different animals and birds.

Kaag Tihar, the first day of Tihar is observed as Kaag Tihar by feeding crows, regarded as messengers in the Nepali society.

Kukur tihar, the second day of Tihar is done by worshipping of the dogs.  The third day: Gai Tihar and Laxmi Pooja, in this day the worship of cows is done in the morning and then laxmi, the Goddess of wealth in the hindu mythology is worship. And then on the second last day of tihar, Goru Pooja is done and Maha Pooja is done in the Newar community by worshipping own soul.  And the last day is Bhai TIka.

The holiday announced by the government is from laxmi Pooja to Bhai Tika.
