Ratnanagar (Chitwan), 18 May, 2015 : The District Agricultural Office, Chitwan, has said the earthquake had damaged food grain of worth 40 million rupees in the district.
As the houses stockpiling rice were destroyed in the quake, 1,160 metric tons of rice that was harvested recently was damaged.
The rice was destroyed with the debris of 2,500 households as per the data maintained by the Agricultural Ofiice.
“The famers however, were striving to shift the remaining food grains from the the wrecked houses” said Chief of the planning section at the Office, Santosh Raj Poudel. He also added that this was the preliminary information, so collecting detailed information would be further continued.
Fourteen VDCs, three municipalities and one sub-metropolis received huge damage of property and some disticts witnessed damage in the food grains especially rice, maize, millet and leguminous due to the earthquake.
The food grains that was damaged included 63 tons of rice costing some 3.5 million; 633 tons of maize costing Rs 16.1 million and 31.65 metric tons of beans costing 3.5 million rupees.
Nearly 70,044 metric tons of rice, 43,247 metric tons of maize and 1,537 tons of millet is produced by Chitwan every year.
The district Disaster Management Committee has informed that relief distribution in the quake-hit areas is continuously being done.
However, detailed information on the total damage of property is yet to come.
