Bhaktapur, Dec 9: The enforcement of the Domestic Violence (Crime and Punishment) Act, 2066 BS has been found to be ineffective in the district despite half a decade of its coming into force.
The fact that only one case of domestic violence has been registered in the district despite the wide prevalence of this form of violence shows the lenient implementation of the Act in the district.
Around 150 complaints of domestic violence are filed in the district annually. According to the Metropolitan Police Sector Bhaktapur, 176 such complaints were filed with it in the Fiscal Year 2012/13 and the number went down to 153 in the Fiscal Year 2013/14.
The Sector stated that it has received 39 complaints so far in the first quarter of the current Fiscal Year, according to which 12 complaints were received in the month of Saun, 10 in Bhadau, 12 in Asoj and five in Kattik.
Although a good number of complaints of domestic violence is received, the police settles most of them through mediation.
