Kanchanpur, Sept 29: The school dropout rate among children of freed Kamaiya is learnt to be high in Kanchanpur district due to poverty.

The former Kamaiya (bonded labourers) are managing their two square meals from daily wages and are unable to manage the expenses for their schoolchildren.

Freed Kamaiya Radheshyam Rana said the parents don’t have sufficient income to manage the uniforms and educational materials to their children.

The schoolchildren of former Kamaiya are compelled to quit the school for failing to pay tuition fees from the lower secondary level.

He said the parents take their children together far away from their houses while earning daily wages.

Under Secretary at the District Education Office Padamraj Bhatta admitted that retaining the children of ex-Kamaiya was a tough job.

He said among 65,000 children of ex-Kamaiya, only 8,000 have studied the secondary and higher level classes.

Bhatta underscored the need for a separate programme for increasing access to education for the children of ex-Kamaiya.
