Kathmandu, Aug. 26: CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has pledged the 50 per cent women’s participation from the party in local election.

Attending the Teej special programme organised by All Nepal Women’s Association here Tuesday on the eve of Teej Festival, he said the party’s manifesto has stated that it will ensure the 50 per cent women participation in the election of local bodies.

Women’s movement in Nepal has gained great achievements after the establishment of democracy, he said.   In the past, women had the least representation in state apparatus, but now situation has changed and they have a good representation in parliament, local bodies, council of ministers, judiciary and bureaucracy.

The festivals of Nepal reflect its cultural and religious diversities and importance, leader Oli said, adding such festivals are the good means for gathering and sharing mutual sorrow and happiness. He sought the state strict policy to discourage the superstition-based incidents of violence against women which are still prevalent in the country.

CPN (UML) Vice Chair and Association Chairperson Bidhyadevi Bhandari stressed that the party should guarantee 50 percent participation of women in local election and fulfill its commitments to that end. Many Nepali women are suffering various kinds of violence against them due to lack of effective laws to that regard, she said.

Even in the party, women members have to toil hard to get their rights and women agenda are always fall under shadow.
